Scaffolding, slate, and three days of rain
A nine panel install on a listed cottage in Dent, and what an in-roof mount costs in labour when the slate has to come off and go back on by hand.
Written by Nell Fairhurst

Nine panels, a listed cottage, and a week where it rained on three of the five days the scaffold was up.
What in-roof mounting costs in labour
Every slate in the array footprint comes off by hand and goes back by hand. On a roof with original slate and no spares, a proportion of them break and have to be matched from a reclaim yard.
We price that as a range in the quote rather than as a fixed line, and we show the range before the job starts rather than after.
Weather
A roof that is open cannot be left open. Two of the three wet days were spent tented, which is scaffold hire you pay for and generation you do not get. It is in the quote as a contingency for exactly this reason.

Run the numbers this argues about
The calculator carries every effect described here. Change one input at a time and see which of them your payback is actually sensitive to.
